Joanna Guthrie

Joanna Guthrie’s first collection, Billack’s Bones, was published by RIALTO in 2007 (‘tenderness and depth and understanding….that commands admiration.’ –  George Szirtes).

Widely published in poetry journals since the late 1990s, she was selected for the Aldeburgh Eight scheme for emerging poets in 2014, was commended in the Gingko Ecopoetry prize in 2017, and again in 2019 - where her poem Waiting also took joint 4th place.

Her non-fiction manuscript Hurricane Season, a meditation on the Florida Keys, was shortlisted by Ali Smith and William Fiennes for the 2006 New Writing Ventures award. Her non-fiction has since appeared in The Guardian and Dark Mountain.

In 2012 she was commissioned to write a libretto for two East Anglian rivers, in collaboration with composer Karen Wimhurst and nature writer Richard Mabey; the resulting piece, Translated by Reeds, was performed by community choirs across Norfolk.

She’s recently been awarded Arts Council England funding to develop a series of lyric essays about activism and the climate/ environmental crisis, As an activist she’s involved in ClimateCultures; XR and XR Writers Rebel; and local campaigns. She lives and works in Norwich, UK.
